Modern Jazz Quartet został założony w 1952 przez Milta Jacksona (wibrafon), Johna Lewisa (fortepian, kierownik muzyczny), Percy'ego Heatha (kontrabas), i Kenny'ego Clarke'a (perkusja). w 1955 Clarke'a zastąpił Connie Kay.
