British jazz-rock group formed in the late 1970s by improvising pianist Veryan Weston. He started the group while on a fellowship with the Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire, where he worked with saxophonist Lol Coxhill. Other members were guitarist Gary Peters, Cliff Venner (drums), saxophonist Simon Picard and electric bassist Dan Brown.
The band's name originated from some fresh winkles bought by Coxhill in Southend-on-Sea and left in his van. According to Weston, after a seeing a gig "Lol rediscovered his winkles in the van. By then they had acquired a certain pungent aroma that nevertheless didn't put Lol off from consuming the lot."
The group initially used material described by Weston as "a kind of Crusaders/Little Feat/Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock/Frank Zappa/Steely Dan composite." The band took part in competitions as a means of getting work. This resulted in a few broadcasts, some subsidised tours, and a recording of a live gig in Poland (the album Hysterical Woman). Their only other recording was made through a connection with Coxhill's friend Morgan Fisher for his Miniatures project. This was the last part of a piece recorded for Radio London, broadcast from Ronnie Scott's: the middle movement of Webern's Opus 5.
The group disbanded in the early 1980s.
