Gainsbourg, Lucien Ginzburg adıyla 1928'de Paris'te doğdu. Ailesi Bolveşik İhtilali sonucu Fransa'ya kaçan Rus Yahudilerdi. Çocukluğu II. Dünya Savaşı yüzünden zor geçti.
