Jamband is an approach to playing music, not a music genre itself. To jam means both to improvise, and also to play exhilarating peaks of music. A band that plays music with exhilarating improvisational jams is sometimes called a jamband. A jamband combines two or more genres of music with improvisation, never a pure example of a singular genre. For example a jamband may play jazz-rock, or reggae-bluegrass, or funk-hip-hop (sometimes the same band will play all these genres in a concert). Jambands focus on music and instrumental expression, but also sometimes include singing and words. Most jambands write original songs, and embellish the composed songs with extended segments of musical improvisation. .
