n 1996, Karl Giesing started recording his tape-loop compositions and noise assemblages. It was at this time that he adopted the name Karlheinz for his musical persona. The name was given to him by Keith Fullerton Whitman, after German electronic composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, a musical influence common to both Karl and Keith. From 1998-2000, Karlheinz was one half of the explosive percussion-and-electronics duo Lord and Karlheinz (Max Lord being the other half). And in May-June 2003, he teamed up with drummer John Ruhe to form Karlsruhe. However, for the most part he performs as a solo noise artist. .
Karlheinz Stockhausen (August 22, 1928 - December 5, 2007) was a German composer, widely acknowledged by critics as one of the most important but also controversial composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He is known for his ground-breaking work in electronic music, aleatory (controlled chance) in serial composition, and musical spatialization. He was educated at the Hochschule für Musik Köln and the University of Cologne, and later studied with Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and with Werner Meyer-Eppler at the University of Bonn.
