Many groups in the post-punk era adopted a more rhythmic tempo, conducive to dancing. These bands were influenced by funk, disco, synth and other dance music popular at the time as well as being anticipated by some of the 1970s work of the Sparks, Iggy Pop et al. Those were called dancepunk (or punk funk) bands as a subgenre of electropunk (not to be confused with electroclash) and had a small following due to punk bands being averse to the use of synthetizers being the main focus instead of the use of guitars.
Dance-punk was then revived among some bands of the garage rock/post-punk revival in the early years of the new millennium with more success than it had before. .
