Pfaff is mainly the alter-ego of Bas Jacobs from Amsterdam. Before becoming Pfaff, he was known as the bass player from the succesfull Dutch band Seedling. He has always made poetry and started making music with Pfaff (back then they were trio) while Seedling still excisted. After two Pfaff-bandmembers quit, Bas (vocals, guitar & drums) decided to go on like a duo with Alice Bron (guitar, keyboards, kazoo, percussion & some vocals). Together they make lo-fi rockmusic, always surprising and with a good sense of humour. They're often compared to bands like The Pixies, Pavement and The Fall. .
Gary Pfaff was born to be a musician. From the early age of 14 he began taking guitar lessons and only a few years later he was playing open mics and in bars before he was of legal drinking age. He became a fixture on the Atlanta music scene and started his first band called YG, which stood for “Young Gary”, his given nickname at the time. Janitor Joe was a three-person band originating from Minneapolis in the early 1990's. It featured Joachim Breuer (formerly in Bastards) on guitar, Kristen Pfaff on bass, and Matt Entsminger on the drums, with both Breuer and Pfaff sharing vocals. The band was beginning to get famous when Pfaff joined Hole. A replacement bassist was found. Pfaff returned to Janitor Joe briefly before her death in 1994. .
