Sadao Watanabe (渡辺貞夫) is Japan's most famous saxophone player. Born February 1st, 1933, in Utsunomiya in the Tochigi prefecture of Japan, Watanabe began playing the alto sax after moving to Tokyo at the age of 18. He went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1962 to 1965. He plays both alto and soprano saxophone, and has collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Chico Hamilton, Gary Peacock, Chic Corea and Kikuchi Masabumi. The Watanabes are an international indie pop band performing and recording in Tokyo. They enjoy drinking banana juice together and are keen students of Ikebana. The band began life in the orange-laden prefecture of Ehime, and named themselves Watanabe in tribute to the warm and friendly people of the region, whilst also alluding to British indie favourites The Smiths.Three years later, they packed up and shifted to Tokyo in search of new inspiration and regular trains.
