Active in music and the art world, Mikhail Karikis was first spotted by music innovators Björk and Graham Massey and selected for commercial release on Björk's 'Army of Me' album. He has released alongside Scanner, David Toop and others. His music spans from electronica, to alternative pop, Balkan folk and avant-garde. Altai Khairkhan (Mongolian: Алтай Хайрхан) is an overtone singing ensemble from Mongolia founded in 2002 by Childeegiin Palamjav, Sambuugiin Pürevjav and Ejeegiin Toivgoo. The members are from Uvs aimag, situated near the Altai Mountains, one of the main mountain ranges in West Mongolia. "Khairkhan" means to worship. Hence, "Altai Khairkhan" can be translated as "the worshipped Altai mountains". The band's repertoire comprises mainly of Mongolian traditional songs. Khaïra Arby (sometimes spelled Haira) "The Nightingale of the North" is a singer from Mali. She is from the desert- from Agouni, north of Timbuktu, Mali, and cousin to Ali Farka Touré. She sings in Sonrai, Arabic, Tamashek, accompanied by instruments and rhythms just as varied, with electric guitar and trickling beats, calabash, traditional violin and guitar, and drumming that creates that abrupt squared sound of the music from that part of Mali.
