Born in Detroit, Michigan, Eldra Patrick DeBarge was born the fifth of eight brothers and sixth of ten DeBarge family members. In 1972, newly divorced from her abusive husband, El's mother Etterlene moved her children from Detroit to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, the group is named for their shared surname, and included the brothers Mark, James, Randy, and Eldra (or "El"), and their sister Bunny. Younger siblings Chico, Darryl, and Carol DeBarge were also singers (though not with the group), with Chico later becoming a solo star in his own right. The DeBarges, of African-American/French-Canadian descent, signed with the Motown label in the 1970s, and became one of their few successful acts during the 1980s. .

Born in Pasadena, California, DeBarge is the daughter of James DeBarge, the youngest member of the music family DeBarge. She first appeared on national television in 2003 as a contestant on the American Idol spin-off, American Juniors. In 2009, DeBarge signed a contract with the Island Records department Sodapop, releasing her debut album Exposed in July the same year. Bunny is best-known for her duet with her brother El DeBarge on "Share My World" and for writing and singing lead on the group's popular album track, "A Dream" from the group's In A Special Way album and for co-writing hits "I Like It", "Time Will Reveal" and "Stay With Me".
