Cloud rap, also called trillwave is a style of hip hop music noted for its use of ethereal, dreamlike beats, and frequently stream of consciousness, surreal, or absurd lyrics. Cloud rap is comparable to chillwave, both musically through its dreamy qualities and to its origin as an internet sub-subgenre whose producers collaborate through the internet, with various producers surfacing in the Bay Area, New Jersey, and Seattle. Experimental hip hop group cLOUDDEAD and avant-garde hip hop label Anticon, whose sound is rooted in hip hop but uses psychedelic influences and surreal lyrics, has been cited as a precedent to the genre and are at least partially responsible for the name "cloud rap". .
