Born in Cuba, Poveda's earliest infuence was his grandfather, Marcelino Lopez, a folk singer. Poveda became an early follower of the nueva trova movement in Havana. In 1989 he moved to Colombia where he became a T.V. star. However music was always a part of his life, and he continued to write his own music while acting.
