As a minor Thommy was dragged around the east coast sleeping in shelters with his drug addicted mother whom prostituted and sold drugs to support them. Born in Cuba, Poveda's earliest infuence was his grandfather, Marcelino Lopez, a folk singer. Poveda became an early follower of the nueva trova movement in Havana. In 1989 he moved to Colombia where he became a T.V. star. However music was always a part of his life, and he continued to write his own music while acting.
