Rozpoczął karierę w teatrach wodewilowych. Występował jako solista i akompaniował śpiewakom bluesowym. W 1935 zaczął prowadzić swój własny big band i zyskał rozgłos pod pseudonimem Count Basie (ang. hrabia Basie).
