"To call this outing "authentic" would be an understatement, given that Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders took only some digital recording equipment and Sanders' saxophone to Morocco to record it...the recording took place in someone's home with a large cast of musicians, many of whom are Ghania's family members. The recording did not suffer at all from the mobile equipment, and The Trance of Seven Colors lives up to its title, giving the listener first-hand access to Gnawa healing ceremonial music. Pharoah (Farrell) Sanders (Ur. 1940-10-13, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA) należy do najwybitniejszych saksofonistów nowoczesnego jazzu. Po krótkim okresie współpracy z zespołami rhythmandbluesowymi, na początku lat 60. zamieszkał w Nowym Jorku. Współpracował wtedy z muzykami związanymi z freejazzową awangardą: Donem Cherrym, Albertem Aylerem oraz legendarną The Sun Ra Arkestra. W 1965 r. nawiązał trwajacą wiele lat współpracę z Johnem Coltrane’em, biorąc udział w kilku istotnych sesjach nagraniowych. Okres nagrań i koncertów z zespołem Trane’a okazał się najbardziej znaczący w muzyce Sandersa: awangardowy jazz, afro-jazzowe fascynacje oraz swoista "jazzowa misja" umiejscawiały saksofonistę wśród najwybitniejszych twórców "new black tradition" (Coltrane, Ayler, Coleman).
