Do zespołu należą: Kyo (京) - wokal, Kaoru (薫) - gitara, lider, Die - gitara, Toshiya - gitara basowa, Shinya - perkusja. Nazwa zespołu składa się z trzech słów, każde zaczerpnięte z innego języka. "Dir" z niemieckiego, "en" z francuskiego oraz "grey" z angielskiego. Kaoru utrzymuje, iż "Dir en grey" znaczy "szara moneta", jednak dosłownym tłumaczeniem jest "tobie w szarości".
