Zespół powstał w 1999 roku, kiedy perkusista Brann Dailor i gitarzysta Bill Kelliher przeprowadzili się do miasta Atlanta ze swojego rodzinnego Rochester. Trzy tygodnie po przybyciu poznali basistę Troy Sanders i gitarzystę Brent Hinds na koncercie High On Fire, zorganizowanym w piwnicy. Muzycy przypadli sobie do gustu i rozpoczęli pracę nad tworzeniem materiału. Kelliher i Dailor mieli już prawie dziesięcioletnie doświadczenie w graniu i koncertowaniu. Sanders i Hinds jedynie sześcioletnie. Zespół nagrał pierwsze demo w lipcu 2000 roku i z tym materiałem wyruszył na trasę po wschodnim wybrzeżu USA. Pteranodon is the brainchild of Jeff Suthers and Shannon Stein, former members of Volplane and Bright Channel, and current members of Moonspeed. With only one organ and one guitar, Pteranodon was designed to be a lush and gigantic listening experience that combined their love of minimalist musical styles with their equal appreciation for maximum volumes. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2001 on Flight Approved Records, with a follow-up released in June 2005. .

Grupa tworzona przez trio: Don Cherry, Collin Walcott, Nana Vasconselos. Do powstania zespołu doszło w 1977, dzięki szefowi wytwórni ECM, Manfredowi Eicherowi, u którego nagrywali wszyscy trzej artyści, choć w różnych konfiguracjach: Cherry wystąpił na płycie Walcotta "Grazing Dreams", a Walcott spotkał się z Naną przy realizacji "Sol Do Meio Dia" Egberto Gismontiego.
