Jest to duet houseowych muzyków - Felixa Buxtona i Simona Ratcliffe'a - którzy stali się popularni dopiero w późnych latach 90-tych. Duet narodził sie w południowym Londynie, w dzielnicy zwanej Brixton. Organizowali oni w nocnych klubach wspólne imprezy o nazwie "Rooty" (stąd nazwa drugiego albumu).
Na twórczość Basement Jaxx mieli wpływ między innymi tacy artyści jak: Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, Masters at Work oraz Prince. Undergroundową muzykę zmieszali z latynoskimi rytmami, ragga, hip hopem, ze wszystkimi dźwiękami i swoim południowo-londyńskim "klimatem". Tak powstał unikalny styl Basement Jaxx.
