Rupert Homles urodził się 24 lutego 1947 roku w miejscowości Northwich w angielskim hrabstwie Cheshire. Jego ojciec był Amerykaninem i rodzina szybko przeniosła się do Nowego Jorku, gdzie młody Rupert uczęszczał do szkoły, a także szkoły muzycznej (grał na klarnecie). Po ukończeniu 20. Roku życia został muzykiem sesyjnym. Zajmował się pisaniem i aranżacją piosenek, śpiewem oraz grą na kilku instrumentach. Pisał utwory m.in. dla Gene Pitney, the Platters, the Drifters czy Wayne’a Newtona. Jego wydany w 1974r. album “Widescreen” spodobał się Barbarze Streisand, która wykorzystała później napisane przez niego utwory w filmie „A Star Is Born” oraz na swojej płycie...
