General Purpose is a musical project born in 2005 by the impulse of Jean-Philippe Miasnik, singer, songwriter and guitar player, who will supply the band its songs. The group gets fed with inspiration and influences of all the members to enlarge its musical limits and create a music without boundaries in style or time.
The birth of these songs is due to a long maturation and various musical experiences.
Things get serious as Jean-Philippe Miasnik joins SFH (Six Fingers' Hand) in the mid 90's. The style is punk rock, influenced by major bands like Bad Religion, Face to Face or NoFX. The first recording in 2000 gives the band the opportunity to participate to international live shows around Paris. But the professionnal choices of some of the members forces the band to give up after five years of what will remain a great human experience.
Following Arnaud Innocent, former drummer in SFH, in a new hardcore band, JP plays the guitar in Jetsex, talentuous and freaked out parisian combo which is about to end its second LP after playing all around the world in prestigious festivals. That's where he meets Yann.
The real musical transition takes place in 2001 : JP & Raphaël Fontaine (bass player in SFH) set up Fonic together. Based on a duality principle, both write many songs and the set list quickly reaches 30 songs !! Their electro-acoustic sound is supported in live by the caribean rythms of Mister Henri Quarmenil. The trio will play almost 100 live shows in Paris within a two years period. But the two buddies take different directions in their music and Fonic loses its reason to exist little by little. Raphaël sets up Fontaine whil JP starts working on General Purpose.
At this crucial period, JP opens to new music styles and widens its influences by discovering the golden age of the Motown (especially Stevie Wonder), Stax, disco and jazz music. The songs evolve with more sophisticated arrangements with a constancy in melodies. JP plays more and more picking to give its songs subtelty and intensity at the same time.
As he meets Aurelien Latouche & Romain Guillot (bass and drums), these acoustic songs evolve to fit with a band spirit. The Jazz Rock and Funk influences of the rythm section will slightly modify the folk rock approach of the titles to give them a more subtle and powerful sound. Then starts a long recording process. The base of the songs gets enriched with the voices of Dellya Ombade & Claude Rigoreau, the percussions of Henri Quarmenil and the heat of the Gibson, giving Genral Purpose songs something special, halk way between styles and time. Furious rock songs integrate tribal percussions, you can hear the 70's spirit in the folk ballads, pop songs vibrate on bossa rythms while electric and acoustic guitars share the scene.
