ANTI

In order to properly document old school punk / Hardcore in L.A., you definitely could not leave out ANTI. ANTI, along with Crucifix and maybe a couple others, where among the first wave of politically oriented "Peace" punk bands that started popping-up in the U.S.
ANTI was also one of the first punk bands in L.A. to start their own label dubbed, New Underground. Run by members Gary Kail and Danny Dean Phillips, the label was created with the intention of releasing vinyl by many bands other than their own.

Besides this great endeavor, Gary and Danny were also involved as full-time members of another great L.A. punk bands of that era, "Mood of Defiance".

In addition , Danny wrote "The South Bay Report" and a variety of interviews for Flipside. Gary on the other hand, was involved with various industrial noise projects, most notably, Zurich 1916.

Formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, during the early 80s, hardcore punk band Anti originally comprised Danny Phillips (vocals, guitar), Steve (drums) and Gary Kail (simultaneously a member of Mood Of Defiance and Zurich 1916; guitar). Their speeded-up protest songs, close to speed metal, eventually won them a sizable following. The politically active Phillips also contributed to the hardcore magazine Flipside. Anti’s debut was no-holds-barred, caustic punk, with little melody or individuality in the song construction to differentiate it from countless similar records. However, their second album saw them change tack entirely to pop punk. Anti’s career essentially amounted to only these two studio albums and a handful of compilation and EP appearances. The steady improvement in their songwriting can partially be credited to the recruitment of new bass player Doug Carrion, whose presence allowed Phillips to take over vocals and guitar. The group set up their own New Underground Records label to facilitate their recordings but were unable to maintain a sympathetic audience as the 80s progressed. Carrion joined Incest Cattle, then the Descendents and Dag Nasty, while the rest of Anti moved on to other projects. Danny Dean Phillips joined Kail in Mood Of Defiance, one of several bands in which Kail had an active interest.
