8歳の時本格的に芸能界入りし、ディズニー・チャンネルの『ミッキー・マウス・クラブ』の公開オーディションに参加するが、番組には幼すぎるという理由で落選になる。その後テレビCMなどで経験を積み11歳の時に『ミッキー・マウス・クラブ』のオーディションに再挑戦して見事合格。14歳でジャイヴ・レコードと契約する。
《歌手としての成功》
16歳でシングル『...Baby One More Time(ベイビー・ワン・モア・タイム)』（1998年10月）でデビュー。同シングルは全世界で915万枚の売り上げを記録し、世界19ヶ国でプラチナム・ディスクを受賞。同名デビュー・アルバム（1999年）はバックストリート・ボーイズで有名なマックス・マーティンや、ホイットニー・ヒューストンを手掛けたエリック・フォスター・ホワイトらによってプロデュースされ、アメリカだけで1726万枚、全世界トータル3000万枚のセールスを記録し、35ヶ国でプラチナム・ディスクを獲得。発売から1年以上にわたりチャートに登場するロングセールスを記録した。
2000年5月、2枚目のアルバム『Oops...I Did It Again(ウップス…アイ・ディド・イット・アゲイン)』はアメリカで1300万枚、全世界トータル2096万枚の売り上げを記録。日本でも35万枚の売上。先駆けて発売された同名シングルのラジオオンエアは、1週間で155局のプレイ・リストにエントリー。アメリカの最高記録を塗り替えた。
デビュー当初は清純路線で「結婚するまで処女」と宣言していたが、2000年にイン・シンクのジャスティン・ティンバーレイクとの交際を告白（のちに破局）。
アメリカで650万枚、全世界トータル1200万枚を認定した3枚目のアルバム『Britney(ブリトニー)』（2001年）の頃からセクシー路線に切り替わり、 アルバム『In The Zone(イン・ザ・ゾーン)』（2003年）では、完全にイノセントなアイドル性を払拭、セクシーなダンス・ビートをベースにしたサウンドで聞き手を圧倒させ、アメリカで430万枚、全世界トータルで800万枚を記録。同アルバムに収録されている曲『Everytime(エヴリタイム)』のビデオ・クリップでは自殺未遂、ドラッグといった描写が問題となり、カットされた。
2004年に発売されたベストアルバム『Greatest Hits: My Prerogative(マイ・プリロガティヴ)』はアメリカで230万枚、全世界トータル600万枚を越え、日本でもオリコン初登場1位を記録し、80万枚を超えるなど世界中で大ヒット。
2007年発売の『Blackout(ブラックアウト)』は全世界300万枚を売り上げ、フランスで開催されたNRJ Awardsでベスト・インターナショナル・アルバム賞を獲得。
1999年にデビューしてからヒット・チャートを総なめにし、アルバムや香水などの様々な視点から人気をキープし、巨万の富を得ており、世界で12番目に金持ちの芸能人と言われていた。
