システム・オブ・ア・ダウン（System Of A Down）は、1995年にアメリカのカリフォルニア州ロサンゼルス市ハリウッドで結成されたロックバンド。バンド名は、ダロン・マラキアン(G)の書いた『VICTIMS OF A DOWN』という曲に由来する。 メンバー全員がロサンゼルスのアルメニア・コミュニティ出身であり、社会的・政治的メッセージの強い歌を歌うことで有名。 Armenia.

1993年にサージ・タンキアンとダロン・マラキアンがソイル(Soil)というバンドを結成、シャヴォ・オダジアンがマネージャーとなる。
1995年、メンバー・チェンジにより、シャヴォがベーシストとなり、バンド名もソイルからシステム・オブ・ア・ダウンに変更。しばらくして、ジョン・ドルマヤンがドラマーとして加入する。
1997年9月、アメリカン・レコードと契約。
1998年6月に1stアルバム『システム・オブ・ア・ダウン』でメジャーデビュー、スレイヤーとともに全米ツアーを行う。
オズフェストに参加、セカンドステージでプレイする。
1999年、オズフェストのメインステージでオープニングアクトを務める。
2000年、ブラック・サバス・トリビュートアルバム『ネイティヴィティ・イン・ブラック 2 - NATIVITY IN BLACK 2 - 』に「スノウブラインド - Snowblind - 」をカバーし提供する。
2001年9月に2ndアルバム『毒性』をリリース。全米初登場第1位を獲得。
2002年11月に3rdアルバム『スティール・ディス・アルバム！』をリリース。
2005年5月に4thアルバム『メズマライズ』を、11月に5thアルバム『ヒプノタイズ』をリリース、ともに全米ビルボード1位を獲得する。
2006年2月、『メズマライズ』からのシングルカット曲「B.Y.O.B.」がグラミー賞で「ベスト・ハードロック・パフォーマンス」賞を獲得。
5月、オズフェストの後しばらく活動休止することを宣言する。
2008年以降、ボーカルのサージはソロや客演、ギターのダロンとドラムのジョンはスカーズ・オン・ブロードウェイ(SCARS ON BROADWAY)で活動中。
2010年11月、オフィシャルサイトにて2011年からの活動再開を告知。
2011年、活動を再開し、6月にはヨーロッパツアーを行う。
