ジョイ・ディヴィジョン(Joy Division)はイギリスのロックバンド。イングランド、マンチェスターにて結成。ポスト・パンクの代表的なバンドであり、ニュー・オーダーの前身のバンドでもある。 かねてからの友人同士であったバーナード・サムナーとピーター・フックは、1976年6月4日金曜日にバズコックスのプロモートによりマンチェスターのフリー・トレード・ホールで行われたセックス・ピストルズのライブに衝撃を受けパンクロックバンドを結成することを決意、メンバーを募集する。程なくヴォーカルとしてイアン・カーティスが参加、ドラマーに関しては紆余曲折の末スティーヴン・モリスが担当することとなった。これがジョイ・ディヴィジョンの始まりである。 当初バンド名はバズコックスのマネージャーのネーミングによりスティフ・キトゥンズ(Stiff Kittens)としていたが、その後デビッド・ボウイのアルバム、『ロウ』収録曲の「ウォーソー(Warsaw)」という名称に変更、そしてイアン・カーティスの発案により1978年1月からジョイ・ディヴィジョンへと変更された。その由来は第二次大戦中のユダヤ人女性の日記を元に書かれた小説"The House of Dolls"に登場するフレーズ"Joy Division"（ナチス・ドイツ時代の将校用の慰安所）である。 初期のサウンドはいわゆるパンク・ロックであったが、次第にマーティン・ハネットによるサウンドプロデュースや、そして何よりイアンの作る絶望や孤独を歌う歌詞及びその歌唱により独自の音楽性を発揮。それが長い不況が続いていたイギリスのリスナー達に受け入れられ高い評価を得た。だが、アメリカツアーを直前に控えた1980年5月18日、突如イアン・カーティスは自宅で首を吊り自殺。遺書などはなかったためその理由は明らかではないが、日頃から持病の癲癇に苦しんでいた上、鬱病、さらに妻デボラとの不仲など女性関係のもつれを抱えていたといわれる。ライヴでも過剰な演出は控え、照明などもイアンの癲癇の発作を誘発しないようにソリッドなものに限られていたという。一方、デボラは後に出版したイアンに関する著書の中で、バーナード・サムナーがイアンの精神状態に悪影響を与えたと非難をしたが、バーナードは「彼女の知っているイアンと、自分の知っているイアンは違う」と述べるに留まっている。 残されたメンバーたちはイアン抜きでアメリカのツアーを敢行。そしてその後ギター、バーナード・サムナーをボーカルにニュー・オーダーと名前を変え活動を継続することになる。そして、後にニュー・オーダーが、イアン・カーティスの自殺への心境を曲にしたのが「ブルー・マンデー(Blue Monday)」と言われる。 ニュー・オーダーは長らくジョイ・ディヴィジョン時代の曲をライブで演奏することはなかったが、活動再開後の1998年以降は積極的にジョイ・ディヴィジョンの曲を演奏するようになっている。 メンバー イアン・カーティス (Ian Curtis)/ボーカル 1980年死去 バーナード・アルブレクト (Bernard Albrecht)/ギター、キーボード　※のちのバーナード・サムナー ピーター・フック (Peter Hook)/ベース スティーヴン・モリス (Stephen Morris)/ドラム .

Sonic Division is a project of two electro freestyle music producers from Poland.
