1989年、スウェーデンのストレームスタードで結成。 1990年代前半のブラックメタルバンドの中でも特にメロディアスな音楽性を持ち、オーセンティックなヘヴィーメタルのツインリードによる流麗なリフやメロディを初めて大胆に導入し、メロディックブラックメタルのスタイルを確立した先駆者として知られる。このジャンルの直系には、ナグルファーなどがおり、ブラックメタルのシーンだけでなく、初期イン・フレイムスやチルドレン・オブ・ボドムといったメロディックデスメタルバンドや、ザ・ブラック・ダリア・マーダーなどのメタルコアバンドなどにも多大な影響を与えている。 1989年　ジョン・ノトヴェイト(Vo,G)をリーダーとして結成される。 1990年　デモ「The Grief Prophecy」発表。 1991年　John Zwetsloot（ギター）の加入によって初期ラインナップが固まる。当時のメンバーは現DEATHSTARSのOle Öhman（ドラム）、Peter Palmdahl（ベース）、John Zwetsloot（ギター）。Corpse Grinder RecordsからEP「Into Infinite Obscurity 」発表。 1992年　デモ「The Somberlain」発表。 1993年　No Fashion Recordsと契約し、1st「The Somberlain」を発表。このアルバムは同年に刺殺され死去したメイヘムのEuronymousに捧げられたものでもある。 1994年　ドイツのNuclear Blastと契約し移籍。 1995年　2nd「Storm Of The Light's Bane」発表。 1996年　EP「Where Dead Angels Lie」発表。 1997年　デモ音源やサイドプロジェクトSatanizedの音源などをまとめた企画盤「The Past Is Alive (The Early Mischief)」発表。ジョン・ノトヴェイトが殺人幇助により逮捕。活動を休止する。 2003年　復活に先駆け、1997年～98年のFrozen in Wackenでの録音を正式に音源化したライブアルバム「Live Legacy」発表。ただし、Night's Bloodは演奏自体はされたもののマイクトラブルによって削除されており、オフィシャルのCDには収録されていない。 2004年　ジョンの釈放とともに活動を再開。Escapi Musicからシングル「Maha Kali」を発表。この音源は獄中で録音されたもので、フルレンス収録のものとはアレンジがかなり異なる。カップリング曲は2nd収録曲Unhallowedのセルフカヴァー。 2006年　The End Recordsからシングル「Starless Aeon」発表。さらにBlack Horizon Musicから約11年ぶりの3rdフルアルバム「Rainkaos」、ライブDVD「Rebirth of Dissection」発表と順調な活動をみせる。しかし「ディセクションは最終章を迎えた」として解散を発表。その後の活動が待ち望まれる中、8月にジョン・ノトヴェイトが拳銃自殺により自らの命を絶ったということが伝えられる。31歳であった。 　自らの周りに書物を並べ、ろうそくを点した部屋で死んでいたということから、生粋のサタニストであるジョンにとって自殺も何らかの儀式だったのではないかという説がある。 トーメンターのElizabeth Bathoryをカヴァーした経緯から、トーメンターのヴォーカルであったアッティラ・シハー（現メイヘム）が、2004年のディセクションのノルウェーオスロでのライブにてゲスト参加し、Elizabeth Bathoryを歌った。 再結成後、当初は元エンペラーのFaust (Bård Eithun)がドラムとして参加する予定であったが、結局はセッションに留まり、実現しなかった。 ジョン・ノトヴェイトは1995年に設立されたMisanthropic Luciferian Orderのメンバーでもあった。3rdアルバム「Rainkaos」の歌詞やアートワークはそれに基づくものである。 Misanthropic Luciferian Orderには、当時のディセクションのギタリストJohan Normanも加入していた。 Johanは、1997年にディセクションを失踪する形で脱退しているが、これはMisanthropic Luciferian Orderの考え方についていけなくなったことと、ジョンからの報復を恐れたためであった。 メガデスがヘッドライナーのライブへの参加を断られたことがある。これは、メガデスのデイヴ・ムステインがキリスト教の信者のため、サタニックなバンドとの競演を嫌がったことによる。 1st「The Somberlain」の国内盤ライナーノーツのインタビューにて、彼のセルフライナーが「はじめまして！ ディセクションのヴォーカル兼ギターのジョン・ノトヴェイトだよ」という妙に明るいコミカルな語り口に統一されて訳されてしまった。 加えて、その口調のまま楽曲の陰鬱で絶望的なテーマについて元気よく語っているため、得も言えぬ珍妙さが醸し出され、未だに名ライナーノーツの一つとして語りぐさになっている。 .

Arguably the pioneers of the retro-modernist funk movement, Munich's Poets of Rhythm, recorded their classic debut album in 1993. The sound that these German boys made could easily come from the Southside of Chicago in the late 60's, or Memphis in the height of the Stax era.
