1988年ニューヨーク州バッファローで結成。 デスメタルの代表的存在で、後の様々なバンドに影響を与えた。 非常に高度な演奏技術を持っておりライブでのパフォーマンスは見るものを圧倒する。 ニューヨークを中心に活動していたが、後にフロリダ州タンパへ活動の場を移す。 サフォケイション、マルヴォレント・クリエイションらと共にニューヨークを中心に活動を行い、デス、モービッド・エンジェル、オビチュアリー、ディーサイドらフロリダ勢と共に、1990年代初頭のアメリカデスメタルシーンの創生期を支え、世界中のデスメタルバンドに影響を与えた。 また彼らがレコーディングに使用したフロリダ州タンパのモリサウンドとそこを拠点に活躍していたプロデューサーの「スコット・バーンス」が作り出すサウンドは世界中のデスメタルバンドの憧れになり、世界中から次々とデスメタルバンドがレコーディングに訪れるようになった。 どこまでもデスメタル的な音楽を貫き通す音楽性、「クリス・バーンズ(Vo)」の非人間的なデスヴォイスは多くのファンを虜にした。現在は後任の「ジョージ・コープスグラインダー・フィッシャー」がボーカルを務めている。 グロテスクなジャケットも人気の一つ。中には発売禁止になったアルバムもある。そのため、アメリカでは彼等のCDの多くは検閲バージョン（グロテスクさ控えめ）と検閲無しバージョン（正式なジャケット）の2種類が有る。北米市場では検閲バージョンの流通が主流だが、国内盤のジャケットは検閲無しバージョンが基本的に採択されてきた。ただし、2004年発売の『ザ・レチッド・スポーン』は検閲バージョンが採用された。 また、カンニバルコープスは、ジム・キャリー主演の映画『エース・ベンチュラ』(1994年公開)にカメオ出演している。 現在のメンバー ジョージ・コープスグラインダー・フィッシャー　George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher - (Vo) (1996- ) 元Monstrocity。Paths of Possessionでも活動している。 パット・オブライエン　Pat O'Brien - (G) (1997- ) ネヴァーモア脱退後にカンニバル・コープスに加入した。Monstrocityにも参加していた。 ロブ・バーレット　Rob Barrett - (G) (1993-1996, 2005- ) 元Malevolent Creation、Hateplow。 アレックス・ウェブスター　Alex Webster - (B) (1988- ) Cannibal Corpseのリーダー。Watchtower、Spastic Inkのロン・ジャーゾンベクとともにデスメタルインストバンドBlotted Scienceでも活動。Hate Eternal、Alasに参加していたこともある。 ポール・マズルケビッチ　Paul Mazurkiewicz - (Ds) (1988- ) クリス・バーンズ　Chris Barnes - (Vo) (1988-1995) カンニバル・コープスの初期ヴォーカル。彼が参加したアルバムのあまりに非人間的なヴォーカルはいまだなお評価が高い。 カンニバル・コープス在籍時にオビチュアリーのアレン・ウェストと共にサイド・プロジェクト、シックス・フィート・アンダーを始めたが、シックス・フィート・アンダーの方に入れ込みすぎたあまり、カンニバル・コープスからの解雇を言い渡された。また、フィンランドのトーチャー・キラーにもボーカルとして参加していた。 ジャック・オーウェン　Jack Owen - (G) (1988-2004) カンニバル・コープス脱退後、ディーサイドに加入した。 ボブ・ルセイ　Bob Rusay - (G) (1988-1993) 殺人、死体愛好などおぞましいテーマを扱っているが、 中心人物のアレックス・ウェブスターは映画「ヘッドバンガーズ・ジャーニー」で「ファンタジーだよ」と語っている。 .

There are two bands sharing this name: 1. A Brutal Death Metal from Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Formed in the middle 1995, Death Vomit wrote their own Death Metal materials. After a few demos, vomiting the debut album 'Eternally Deprecated' (1999). This album was self released (Demented Mind Records) and succesfully crushed Indonesian Death Metal scene. Re-released in 2002 under licensed by Extreme Souls Production and more spread the hatred all around Indonesia. In August 2006 the album called 'The Prophecy' released through Rottrevore Records. Not just prove as an old Death Metal Band, this release more crushing than before and good...

Only Because of the strong influence of horror on these three genres, there exists considerable overlaps however none of these genres define this band. The Lurking Corpses are some other monster altogether. The Flesh of this beast has been fused together with nightmarish stitching and the rotting innards may pay a bit of homage to those of the past.
