メンバーはすべてラモーン(Ramone)の姓を名乗ったが、これはポール・マッカートニー（ビートルズ）がアマチュア時代、ソロシンガーのスコットランドツアーにバックバンドとして同行した時に名乗った芸名「ポール・ラモーン」を無断借用したものである。
概要
ニューヨークのクイーンズ区に住んでいたジョーイ、ディー・ディー、ジョニー、トミーの4人により結成され、1976年『ラモーンズの激情』("The Ramones")でメジャーデビューした。
1978年にトミーが脱退しマーキーが加入。1983年にマーキーが脱退しリッチーが加入も1987年に脱退しマーキーが再加入。その後1988年にディー・ディーが脱退し翌年C・Jが加入とメンバーの入れ替わりが4回あった。
21枚のアルバムを残して1996年に解散。初期の3枚はロックの歴史に残る名盤と評価されている。1979年に発表した7枚目のアルバム『エンド・オブ・ザ・センチュリー』（フィル・スペクターがプロデュースを担当した）はラモーンズの最大のヒットアルバムとなり、現在も大リーグの試合でこのアルバムの曲が演奏され、アメリカ人に深く浸透している。
その音楽はデビューから解散まで一貫しており、シンプルでキャッチーなメロディー、コードは3～4つのみを使用、ダウンストローク一辺倒のリフ、ギター及びドラムのリズムは8ビート中心という、極めてシンプルでスピーディーな短い曲ばかりである。トレードマークである革ジャン、ジーンズ、モズライト（ジョニーの使用ギター）も解散まで貫き通した。
ラモーンズの評価はアメリカよりもイギリスのほうが高く、セックス・ピストルズ、クラッシュらのロンドン・パンクの先駆者となった。2006年には中南米で人気が盛り上がり、マーキー・ラモーン単独で2万人規模のコンサートが開催された。
セックス・ピストルズ、クラッシュ、ダムドとともに「4大パンクバンド」と称される。また、リチャード・ヘル&ザ・ヴォイドイズ、ジョニー・サンダース&ザ・ハートブレイカーズ、テレヴィジョン、パティ・スミス（パティ・スミス・グループ）とともに「5大ニューヨーク･パンクバンド」と称される。 .
