Envenomist is the sinister synth project of David Reed (also known as Luasa Raelon), hailing from Columbus, Ohio. This project, envenomist, has multiple releases on renowned avant-garde labels such as Hanson and bloodlust! chicago. .

1979年、イギリスのニューカッスルで結成。 初期(1981-85年頃)の、マンタス(g)、クロノス(b/vo)、アバドン(ds)のラインナップが最も有名。 　 特徴としてよく挙げられるのは、状態の良くない録音、個性的な演奏、がなりたてるボーカルなどで、音楽的にはモーターヘッドとよく比較される。NWOBHMでもかなりの異色のバンドである。 歌詞の中には、悪魔、地獄、反キリスト教思想的な言葉が並び、これらのテーマは様々なメタルバンドに影響を与えたが、ヴェノムの歌詞はあまりシリアスな雰囲気やグロテスクな感じを与えるものではない（これは曲の雰囲気が寄与するところもあるかもしれない）。 またブラックメタルというジャンルの名称は彼等のセカンドアルバムに因んでいるが、彼らの音楽は「ブラックメタル」とは距離がある。 　 　 1981年に1stアルバム『Welcome To Hell』を地元ニューカッスルのニート・レコードから発表。1985年には『Possessed』を発表し、1987年には来日公演も果たす。来日直前にマンタス(g)が脱退、マイク・ヒッキー(g)ジム・クレア(g)の加入でツインギターとなる。その後クロノスが脱退しアル・バーンズ(g)、デモリッションマン(b/vo)が加入。1997年の『Cast In Stone』発表時には結成当時のラインナップの再結成を果たすが、2000年にはアバドンが脱退しアントン(ds)が加入。2005年にはマンタスが脱退、マイク・ヒッキー(g)が復帰する。2007年初頭にマイクが再び脱退し、現在のラインナップはクロノス(b/vo)、アントン(ds)、LA　レイジ(g)である。 バンド自体はNWOBHMに括られることが多いが、その音楽は後のスピードメタル、スラッシュメタル、ブラックメタルの原点になった。 現在でもバンドは活動を続けている。 .
