バップのお手本ともいえるレイジーでクサみのあるタッチを持った代表的ピアニスト。一方で、アプローチにおいて比較的地味な演奏家とも酷評された。クラークが50年代に残した作品群は独特のスウィング感と歌心があり、現地アメリカより日本人ジャズ・ファンの間で大いに話題となった。31年ペンシルヴェニア州生まれ。63年没。25歳まで西海岸を拠点に活動し、ケニー・ドリュー（p）の後任として参加したパディ・デフランコ（cl）のバンドでその個性を磨く。57年にニューヨークへ移ると、仄暗く憂いに満ちた独特のタッチを確立、ブルーノートで多くの録音に起用される。ことに『クール・ストラッティン』は日本のジャズ喫茶で一番の人気リクエスト盤となった。
