各地のライブ活動等を通して顔見知りだった山本アキヲと佐脇オキヒデの2人が1993年に結成、実験的なライブを目的にスタートさせる。
当時アキヲは、数々のプロジェクト等でヴォーカルやベース、キーボードをプレイ。オキヒデは80年代後半からユニット等でアバンギャルドなエレクトロサウンドをプレイし注目を集めていた。お互いの音楽性に触発された彼らは、不定期なパーティーでライブをプレイ、作品を発表。1994年には彼らの出演していたパーティーをオーガナイズしていた田中フミヤのレーベル、とれまレコードより"Muzikanova/Pique-A"をリリース。そしてその後、オファーを受けていたイギリスのRISING HIGHから1994～95年にかけて"TangTangue-EP","Love Light EP"とアルバム"SINSEKAI"をリリース、そのオリジナリティー溢れる音楽性はヨーロッパのプレス、リスナーから熱烈な支持を得、 TANZMUZIKの名を知らしめることとなった。
1995年秋、彼ら2人によるプライベートなソロトラック集が、サブライムレコーズより、"AKIO/OKIHIDE-Scraches"としてリリースされる。それ以降、よりプライベートを基'に彼らはそれぞれのソロ作品をリリース。1996年、アキヲは東京へ移住。田中フミヤとのユニット｢フードラム｣や篠原ともえ、平岩英子、ヒカシューなどへの作曲、編曲、リミックス、そしてヨーロッパでもファナティックなファンを持つことで知られる｢AKIOMILANPAAK｣名義では、前述のとれまレコードから"FAKIR"、"LAMBORGHINI"、"GULCIA"をリリースするなどメジャー、インディーを問わない活動を展開。オキヒデはサブライムレコーズのコンピレーション"SUBLIME the ADOLESCENCE"など数々のコンピレーションに参加、また女性ヴォーカルをフィーチャーした3人のユニット｢BAMBI SYNAPSE｣でアルバム"WEATHER FORCAST"、そして友人の運営するSYZYGY RECORDSよりプライベートスケッチ集"OKIHIDE-ABOY IN PICCASEASON"を発表する。
1997年に入り、以前からの友人であったARMの久川大志をメンバーとして迎え、アキヲの"Version Citie"というコンセプトを基にプライベートフィルムと音楽を製作、"VERSION CITIE HI-LIGHTS"を完成させる。このアルバムはテクノフィールドのみならず、ドイツのニュー・ジャズやＵＳのオルタナティブなシーンまで、実に幅広い層から支持されることとなる。アルバムからのシングルカットとなった"Version City Episode Remixes EP"はPatrick Pulsinger、Derrick CarterとAKIOMILANPAAKのリミックスを収録している。1998年に入り、オキヒデは過去のソロライブ作品を自身でリミックスするというコンセプトのシリーズ「CX AUDIO IE」を始動。先行の12インチシングル「01」「02」はテクノ、ハウス、ジャズなど、実に幅広いリスナー層から高い評価を受けた。そして2000年に入り、このシリーズの続「3」を経てアルバム「ALPHA 000-011」を発表した。
Tanzmuzik was formed in '93 by Akio Yamamoto and Okihide Sawaki in order to make experimental music. They got to know each other through their live music careers - Akio played bass guitar, keyboards and also sang for various projects. Okihide played avant - garde electro music from the late '80s.
From the mixture of their musical influences, they played energetically live PAs at different parties. In 1994 Fumiya Tanaka, who organized a party at which Tanzmuzik played, released "Muzikanova/Pique-A" on his label, Torema Records. Tanzmuzik also released "Tan Tangue - EP", "Love Light - EP" and an album "Sinsekai" on Rising High in '94 -'95.

In '95, a compilation of their more private solo works "Akio/Okihide - Scratches" was released on Sublime Records. After that release they Returned to their own careers.
By '96 Akio had moved to Tokyo, and as well as releasing on the Torema label under the name of Akio Milanpaak, his musical career crossed into the major field when he began a new project with Fumiya Tanaka called "Hoodrum" for Sony Japan , which inevitably led to major remix work.
Okihide has released 2 further solo albums, "The Weather Forecast" (a vocal project under the name of Banbi Synaps) and the highly regarded "A Boy In Picca Season" on Syzygy Records, as well as contributing tracks to various compilation albums, including "Sublime - The Adolescence".

In '97 Akio began working on the concept for Tanzmuzik's next album - 'Version Citie'....Okihide and an old friend Daishi Hisakawa got on board and together they produced the 'road-movie' and soundtrack to that concept. The album earned respect from artists as diverse as 808 State and Compost Records, and an EP from the album saw the reputation grow further with Derrick Carter and Patrick Pulsinger providing their own interpretations.

In '98, Okihide started "CX Audio IE" series with the idea based on remixing his own old solo live works. "01""02" then "03", and an album, "ALPHA 000-011" was released in 2000. .
