l gruppo si forma nel 1980 negli UK dopo che Martin Fry, un giornalista musicale, ebbe intervistato la band Vice Versa per la sua fanzine, Modern Drugs. I Vice Versa cambiarono quindi nome in ABC e adottarono come cantante proprio Martin Fry. Il gruppo fu subito classificato di genere "British Syntpop NewRomantic", di cui facevano già parte gruppi come Duran Duran e Spandau Ballet. Il primo singolo, Tears Are Not Enough, uscì nel 1981 ed entrò nella Top 20 britannica. Poco dopo il batterista David Robinson uscì dal gruppo e fu sostituito da David Palmer. .

Butcher ABC was formed by Analtoshit (ex MAGGOTY CORPSE guitar/ex CSSO) and GROTES-Q (ex drummer of CSSO in '95 -'99) in '94.
