I rufio si formarono quando il bassista Jon Berry era appena uscito dal collegee gli altri tre membri, Scott Sellers, Mike Jimenez, e Clark Domae erano all'ultimo anno. Sellers incontrò Berry e cominciarono a suonare insieme in vari gruppi. Successivamente Berry e Sellers cominciarono a registrare,e chiesero a Jiminez di ascoltare i loro pezzi e di suonare per loro la batteria. Domae si aggiunse in breve e completò la formazione attuale. La band prese il nome dal personaggio Rufio, leader dei Lost Boys da Peter Pan il film che ispirò la canzone "Hook". .

Ensamble Gurrufío is one of the most interesting instrumental groups from Venezuela, formed in 1984 by virtuosos Cheo Hurtado (cuatro player), Cristóbal Soto (mandolinist) and Luis Julio Toro (flutist). David Peña (double bassist) completed the ensemble in 1989. They focused on the research, arrangement and reinterpretation of Venezuelan Folk music with a classical-educated approach, but allowing for improvisations as a fundamental element for their performances.
