I Soundgarden nascono nel 1982 con il nome di The Shemps, grazie a Chris Cornell (voce e batteria) e Hiro Yamamoto (basso). Con l'arrivo nel 1984 di Kim Thayil alla chitarra, ai tempi DJ del college che Cornell frequentava, e di Scott Sundquist alla batteria (ingresso quest'ultimo che darà modo a Cornell di concentrarsi solo sulla voce) il gruppo cambia il nome in Soundgarden.
