Der Blutharsch è il principale progetto musicale del musicista austriaco Albin Julius. Originariamente si trattava di un progetto collaterale del precedente gruppo di Julius, i The Moon lay hidden beneath a Cloud; la prima pubblicazione con il nome Der Blutharsch fu un picture disc omonimo a tiratura limitata a 250 copie uscito nel 1996. I primi brani realizzati da Der Blutharsch avevano una sonorità molto vicina al dark ambient su cui si inserivano campionature di registrazioni d'epoca e rumorismi di tipo post-industrial. They established themselves very quickly in Dunedin, as all five members had previously played in top local bands such as Throb and Pussyfoot. They were insistent on remaining a Dunedin based band even after attracting considerable national interest. They signed to HMV in 1972 and produced two albums during that year.
