Il trio originario, The Blue Velvets, costituito da John Fogerty, Cook e Clifford, si forma nel 1959 a El Cerrito, California. Reclutato Tom Fogerty, a metà degli anni '60 la band firma per la Fantasy Records, che cambia il nome del gruppo in The Golliwogs, con riferimento a Golliwog, un pupazzo-menestrello di un libro per bambini. Vengono pubblicati sette singoli, tra cui Brown Eyed Girl, che tuttavia non ricevono alcuna attenzione da parte del pubblico. Nel 1967 la band cambia nome in Creedence Clearwater Revival.
