Acqua Fragile | it

Gli Acqua Fragile furono un gruppo di rock progressivo italiano degli anni ‘70, originario della zona di Parma.

Il gruppo si chiamava inizialmente Gli Immortali, e comprendeva Bernardo Lanzetti (voce), Gino Campanini (chitarra) e Piero Canavera (batteria), a cui si erano aggiunti in seguito il tastierista Maurizio Mori e il bassista Franz Dondi. Dondi proveniva da un altro gruppo minore, Moschettieri, che nel 1967 aveva inciso un 45 giri («Il tempo dell'amore») e aveva suonato come spalla in un concerto italiano dei Rolling Stones).

Gli Immortali iniziarono a esibirsi dal vivo e agli inizi degli anni ‘70 furono notati dai membri Premiata Forneria Marconi, uno dei gruppi di spicco del panorama del rock progressivo italiano. Il manager della Premiata Forneria Marconi, Franco Mamone, decise di seguire anche il gruppo di Bernardo Lanzetti, che nel frattempo aveva cambiato nome in Acqua Fragile. Mamone riuscì a far suonare il gruppo come supporter di molti grandi del rock progressivo, quali Soft Machine, Uriah Heep e Gentle Giant.

Il primo album degli Acqua Fragile, Acqua Fragile, fu pubblicato dall’etichetta indipendente Numero Uno nel 1973. Era un lavoro chiaramente ispirato al progressive britannico (soprattutto Genesis e Gentle Giant) e cantato in inglese (fatto piuttosto anomalo per il panorama discografico italiano dell’epoca).

Acqua Fragile fu distribuito solo in Italia e non ebbe il successo sperato. L’album successivo, Mass-Media Stars (1974) fu stampato anche per il mercato statunitense, che già aveva accolto con entusiasmo la Premiata Forneria Marconi. Alla fine dell’anno il gruppo acquisí un nuovo elemento, il tastierista Joe Vescovi, proveniente dai The Trip appena scioltisi, ma poco tempo dopo fu il cantante Bernardo Lanzetti ad abbandonare per entrare nella Premiata Forneria Marconi (con cui avrebbe realizzato Chocolate Kings). Lanzetti fu sostituito per qualche tempo da Roby Facini (precedentemente nei Top 4 e nei Dik Dik), ma il gruppo non produsse piú nulla e si sciolse definitivamente nel 1975.

I membri del gruppo percorsero poi strade indipendenti. Lanzetti, dopo la Premiata Forneria Marconi, intraprese una carriera solista di discreto successo, allontanandosi dal rock progressivo; recentemente ha collaborato con i Mangala Vallis (gruppo reggiano guidato da Gigi Cavalli Cocchi) nel loro album d’esordio The Book of Dreams (2003), per poi entrare stabilmente nel gruppo a partire da Lycanthrope (2005). Dondi e Canavera suonarono per qualche tempo nei Rocky's Filj, e poi negli Shout!, una tribute band dei Beatles che ha pubblicato due CD negli anni ‘90. Dondi ha anche fondato, di recente, l’Acqua Fragile Project, che ripropone brani del repertorio Acqua Fragile.

This five-piece from Parma was formed in 1971 from the ashes of Gli Immortali, a group that included singer Bernardo Lanzetti, just returned back to Italy after a long living in the USA, guitarist Gino Campanini and drummer Piero Canavera. These musicians were joined by keyboardist Maurizio Mori and bass player Franz Dondi (who had played with I Moschettieri, that were among the young bands supporting The Rolling Stones during their Italian tour, but just released a single in 1967, Quando il tempo dell'amore).
In one of the last concerts with the old name, the five musicians were spotted by Premiata Forneria Marconi, that introduced them to their manager Franco Mamone.

With the new name Acqua Fragile and the professional management of Mamone, the group was able to play with important foreign names such as Soft Machine, Alexis Korner & Snape, Tempest, Curved Air, Audience, Uriah Heep, and above all, Gentle Giant.

Their first album was released in 1973 on the independent Numero Uno label, one of the very few Italian prog albums entirely sung in English. A good album with nice west-coast multivocal influences mixed with an English prog sound, especially inspired by the likes of Genesis and Gentle Giant.
The LP included seven long tracks, with good instrumental parts and the nice original harsh voice of Lanzetti, not far from Family's singer Roger Chapman distinctive tremolo technique.

The choice of singing in English didn't probably help the group in achieving a good popularity in Italy, and the album wasn't released abroad as it was probably planned. Oddly the English lyrics weren't included in the album cover, that only contained the Italian translation.

Second album Mass media stars was from 1974 and also gained an US release, thanks to the English lyrics. Not dissimilar from their first but with a slightly better production, this contained six long cuts.

At the end of 1974 keyboardist Joe Vescovi replaced Maurizio Mori after The Trip's split. He stayed in for some months and his presence is documented in the bootleg-quality Live in Emilia CD.
But the strongest hit to the group's stability came when Bernardo Lanzetti joined PFM, replaced for a while by Roby Facini, previously with I Top 4 and Dik Dik.

After his experience with PFM, Lanzetti embarked in a long successful solo career. He currently plays with Mangala Vallis.
Bass player Franz Dondi and drummer Pier Emilio Canavera have played with Rocky's Filj, and in the Beatles-inspired band, Shout!, that released 2 CD's in the 90's.
Dondi has recently formed Acqua Fragile Project, with a new line up in which he's the only original member, playing the old group's songs.
