Carlos Vives est né le 7 aout 1961 à Santa Marta, Magdalena, en Colombie, ou il a passé son enfance. A l'age de 12 ans, il est parti à Bogotá avec sa famille. Ils ont habité chez Diego Martinez et sa famille. Il a commencé à jouer dans des bars et des cafés de la ville. En 1993, il a sorti "Clásicos de la Provincia".
