The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (aka DSO) was founded in 1914 in Detroit, Michigan. Its most famous music directors were Paul Paray (1951-1962), Antal Doráti (1977-1981), and Neeme Järvi (1990-2005). Paray, Dorati, and Järvi each recorded a large and diverse set of music with the orchestra. Paray's greatest legacy with the DSO is his recording of Russian and French moderns: Saint-Saens, Ravel, Stravinsky, and others. Doráti is notable for his fondness for Eastern European composers. An obscure nugget that has been thankfully unearthed and given to the funk Masses, The Detroit Sex Machines are the epitome of underground funk. The group's music was rediscovered in a Michigan area vinyl collection (circa 2000). Soon after, members of the band were found and re-release of the material from this late '60s/early '70s band was issued. The DSM song “Rap It Together” wound up on the Ubiquity compilation "Searching for Soul." Since then, hardcore funk fans have been digging deep for more from this Motown group. .
