Disturbed est un groupe de nu metal, fondé en 1997 par les musiciens Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak, Mike Wengren et David Draiman. Le groupe de Chicago s'acharna beaucoup pour trouver une maison de disque, avec deux EPs enregistrés séparément et envoyés à plusieurs compagnies. Le premier album, sorti en 2000, s'appelle The Sickness, accompagné du single "Stupify". Le groupe participa ensuite à l'Ozzfest de 2001, puis participa au premier "Music as a weapon tour", une tournée organisée par le groupe, regroupant différents groupes de nu metal et de hard rock. La première tournée réunit Stereomud, Systematic, Adema, Drowning Pool...
