Wintersun est un groupe de speed melodic death metal, projet solo de Jari Mäenpää, ancien chanteur du groupe Ensiferum. Le groupe est fondé par Jari Mäenpää après qu'il a quitté le groupe Ensiferum en 2004. Le premier album éponyme fut lancé le 13 septembre 2004. Il faut souligner que Jari Mäenpää a conçu ce premier album seul et qu'il y a joué tous les instruments lui-même, à l'exception de la batterie dont les enregistrements ont été effectués par Kai Hahto, de Rotten Sound.
