mardi gras indians | es

Mardi Gras Indians are African-American Carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel.

Collectively, their organizations are called "tribes". Many of the tribes also parade on the Sunday nearest to Saint Joseph's Day on March 19 ("Super Sunday") and sometimes at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

There are about 38 tribes. They range in size from a half dozen to several dozen members. The tribes are largely independent, but a pair of umbrella organizations loosely coordinate the Uptown Indians and the Downtown Indians.

Indian tribes are typically found on the night of Saint Joseph's Day, Super Sundays and on Mardi Gras Day if you can spot a tribe. More recently Mardi Gras Indians have been performing at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Their suits do not travel well but some tribes have been performing nationally, and internationally.

Mardi Gras Indians gained the national spotlight when HBO's "Treme" featured them on a weekly basis. Three Indian suits - worn in the series by Clarke Peters - were the standout pieces in the 2010 Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) Museum.
