Two bands have gone by the name The Channels. 1.) The Channels formed in 1955 around the singers Larry Hampden, Billy Morris, and Edward Doulphin; they started as a quintet with two additional part-time members, but soon after they permanently added Earl Michael Lewis and Clifton Wright, formerly of The Lotharios. Lewis was the group's main songwriter, writing (among others) their regional hit "The Closer You Are". The Channels recorded for record labels Gone, Fury, Port, Hit, Enjoy, and Groove. This is a Post-Hardcore, Indie Rock band released their first EP entitled Open on ex-Jawbox bandmate Kim Colletta's DeSoto records. Channels is fronted by producer and singer/guitarist, J. Robbins (Burning Airlines, Jawbox). His recent wife Janet Morgan plays Bass, and Darren Zantek of Kerosene 454 plays drums. Earl Lewis & The Channels were known just as the Channels at the start back in 1956. They were from a combination of two vocal groups, the Channels and the Lotharios. When two member of the Channels left, bass singer Clifton Wright and Earl Michael Lewis of the Lotharios were recruited by the remaining Channels. The following became the Classic Channel lineup: Earl Lewis, Clifton Wright, Edward Doulphin, Billy Morris and Larry Hampden.
