A decir de MC Babo, vocalista del grupo, Cartel de Santa nace cuando, de manera improvisada, sus integrantes subieron a tocar con otro grupo nuevoleonés, durante una borrachera 1996.
Su primer trabajo fue Cartel de Santa Vol. I, producido por Jason Roberts y bajo el sello de BMG, con el que lograron colocarse en el mercado musical mexicano con sus primeros tres sencillos, "Perros", "Todas mueren por mi" y "La pelotona".
