After contemplating a career as a politician or ambassador, TIGARAH felt she could best speak her mind if she made music her life. So, shortly after majoring in political science at Tokyo's renowned Keio University, she started writing songs on her own in her tiny room in Tokyo, inspired by the Baile Funk ("Funk Party", which is, despite the name, completely different from regular funk) music from Brazil. Optiganally Yours's blend of spare, indie pop songwriting and production and strangely lush arrangements has won critical acclaim from the likes of NME, CMJ, Melody Maker, and Cool & Strange Music Mag, among other publications. The band began with Pea Hix's (formerly of Tit Wrench and Lucas & Friend) fascination with the Optigan, a keyboard manufactured in the early and mid-'70s by Mattel. An "optical organ," the Optigan stores its sounds -- which range from organs and strings to drum loops and sound effects -- on a collection of celluloid optical discs. .

CANTIGA began at the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville Texas as the result of a musical collaboration which began in the 1970's. Fiddler Malcolm Smith and harpist Martha Gay joined forces to focus on the performance of ancient Europeam repertoire. The group selected the name CANTIGA, meaning "song" in Spanish in the tradition of Alfonso X, also known as "El Sabio".
