Shane Bartell grew up in the Texas Hill Country, surrounded by cowboy boots and snuff -- cultural references erased by his turning-point discovery of The Smiths and The Pixies. Moving to music-mecca Austin in the 90s, he spent several years as the guitarist for the female-fronted band Cling and enjoyed sharing stages with the likes of Oasis and Liz Phair. Bereits ein Jahr nach der Gründung nahm die Band ihre erste CD Songs from the Urban Country Hell auf, die die Hamburger Plattenfirma Strange Ways aufhorchen ließ. Labelchefin Kathrin Achinger produzierte 1993 den Nachfolger Polka Hard, der den Joy-Division-Klassiker Love Will Tear Us Apart in Polkaversion enthält und der von dem bekannten BBC-Radio-DJ John Peel in dessen Sendung ausgestrahlt wurde.
