In 1987, a small record label was founded by Ed Piller and Radio London on air personality Gilles Peterson. The duo set out to combine the progressive elements of Jazz with the attitude of Hip Hop. Thus, the Acid Jazz label was born. Signing young, creative talents such as Chris Bangs (The Quiet Boys,) The Brand New Heavies, and A Man Called Adam, the label soon developed such a reputation, that most any music resembling the label's signature sound was referred to as Acid Jazz. Work Clothes is the husband and wife pair Jenny & Lee Waters. Recording for their first full length was done at home in their own Bless This Mess studio. At home is where they spent close to three years writing and recording the twelve hauntingly bittersweet pop gems that grace this record. Final mixing was handled by the warm and thoughtful ears of their good friend Brian Paulson (Slint, Archers of Loaf, The Rosebuds). With both Lee & Jenny being multi-instrumentalists(Lee plays drums with The Essex Green and Dean & Britta) they tend to prefer record all of their songs...
Clothilde used to say that she was more into painting than music. She was a protege of renowned producer Germinal Tenas (an alias for Christian Fechner). Germinal worked with punk Antoine et les Problemes, Christine Delaroche and he later formed his own band, Chorus Reverendus. He enjoyed mixing traditional pop sounds with weird instruments like the French horn. The result was a strange and splendid baroque pop, not dissimilar to Shadow Morton's productions for The Shangri-Las, and every one of the eight songs Clothilde and Germinal did together are musts!
