Dorsal Atlantica wurden 1983 in Rio de Janeiro gegründet. Sie waren Pioniere der Brasilianischen Thrash Metal Szene, sie waren bekannt als ein Einfluss für viele anderen Bands wie z.B. Sepltura und Korzus. Das erste Werk der band erschien 1984 auf dem split-album Ultimatum, zusammen mit einer anderen Band aus Rio. Danach veröffentlichte Dorsal Atlantica eine Reihe Studioalben von 1984 bis 1996, bis die Band sich schließlich 1997 trennte. Die meisten ihrer Texte sind in Portugiesisch geschrieben, nur ein paar werk beinhalten zwei Sprachen (Englisch/Portugiesisch) und nur ein Album ist komplett in Englisch verfasst. .
