1) German Thrash Metal
BLACKOUT wurden im Anfang 1985 in Berlin gegründet und orientierten sich musikalisch an METALLICA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, CELTIC FROST und VENOM. Die fünf Ost-Berliner Stefan Hoffmann (v), Jochen Klemp (g), Tim Schallenberg (g), Andreas Bahr (b) & Jan Lubitzki (d) erreichten eine Einstufung als "Amatuerband der Obersrufe" und erlangten recht schnell Popularität. Weil ihre Konzerte fast immer ausverkauft waren, avancierte BLACKOUT bald zur Kult-Band. Von 1985 bis 1987 wurde der Posten des Sängers von Matthias Windelschmidt besetzt, da Stefan Hoffmann in dieser Zeit seinen Wehrdienst ableistete. Im Jahr 1986 wurde Drummer Jan Lubitzki nach einem Fluchtversuch verhaftet und für einige Zeit in den Strafvollzug der DDR gesteckt. Sein Nachfolger war Torsten "Tier" Stahnke, der später auch die Drums bei DISASTER AREA bediente. Das Quintett nahm im Proberaum 1987 ein Demo-Tape auf, wobei die Songs mit ausschließlich englischen Texten aus der Feder von Peter Habermann (damals Sänger von DISASTER AREA) stammten, der eng mit der Band befreundet war. Die beiden Songs dieses Tapes wurden auch in der "Heavy-Stunde" des ostdeutschen Jugendradios gespielt, so daß das Demo in Tapetrader-Kreisen ein gesuchter Juwel war. Als die Querelen mit der DDR-Obrigkeit immer unerträglicher wurden, stellten die Mitglieder der Band einen Ausreiseantrag. Im September 1988 gaben BLACKOUT ihr letztes Konzert in der Berliner Langhansstraße und lösten sich dann auf, weil den Musikern nach und nach die Ausreise bewilligt wurde. Nach der Wende starteten Jan Lubitzki (wechselte vom Schlagzeughocker zum Gesang), Jochen Klemp (g), Ingo Grigoleit (g), Tim Schallenberg (der von der Gitarre zum Bass wechselte) & Norbert Drescher (d) unter dem Banner DEPRESSIVE AGE neu durch und ihre beiden Demos "Beyond Illusions" und "The New Demo" brachten ihnen einen Deal mit dem aufstrebenden "G.U.N. Records"-Label ein. Es erschienen vier Longplayer, wobei die Berliner eher Kritikerlieblinge als eine massenkompatible Band waren. Ihre Musik wurde als Melancholic Thrash vermarktet und von manchen als Mischung aus SLAYER und PINK FLOYD bezeichnet. Vor der vierten Platte "Electric Scum" 1996 verließ Gitarrist Ingo Grigoleit die Band und DEPRESIVE AGE wurde in D-AGE umbenannt. Die Band löste sich dann Mitte 1999 auf und eine Wiederbelebung von DEPRESSIVE AGE durch Sänger Jan Lubitzki im Jahr 2005 währte leider auch nicht lange.

Band Biography for Blackout:

7 bands go by the name of Blackout;

A Dutch Heavy Metal band, one Polish "big-beat" group (created by Tadeusz Nalepa in 1965, changed the name for Breakout in 1967), a RAC band from Wales, one hardcore punk band from New Zealand, rock band from Chile, one from Seattle, one from the Midwest and a heavy riff-rock band from Denver that was active 2002-2003.
The following refers to the latter:

Blackout is an explosive force in the Midwest music scene. This five piece, all-original, hard rock group was founded in 2002 by nationally acclaimed drummer Rick Lorek. Blackout has earned the reputation of a tightly wrapped, high energy package of rock and roll and is one of the most respected live bands in Chicago. Through independent touring, promotion, and self-management, Blackout has been paying their dues for the past 4 years.

Blackout has developed a strong loyal fan base and has played packed venues such as Chicago’s historic Double Door, The Metro and The House of Blues. They have also supported national acts including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trapt, Buckcherry, Shinedown, Collective Soul and Constantine Maroulis of American Idol. Chicago rockers Marty Casey & The Lovehammers and Local H have also shared the stage with Blackout. While Blackout’s strength is in their music, the fans never tire of their energetic stage performances.

In 2004, Blackout released their first EP, “Away From Home”, recorded at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios. The four song compilation sold thousands of units at live shows and over the internet.

Blackout’s 2006 EP “In This Moment” captures the very edge of modern rock. This EP was produced and engineered by Tadpole (Disturbed, Finger 11, 3 Doors Down). Blackout has received world wide attention with the new EP through radio play, countless internet downloads and being featured in the nationally distributed motion picture, Space Daze 2: Spaced Out.

While their music continues to evolve, Blackout’s catchy songs and unique sound captivate an ageless audience. Lucky of the Los Angeles based publication Sugar Buzz Magazine states, “Taking their art to lofty levels, Blackout’s sound reaches deep into your psyche and leaves a solid impression”.

Always adding to their repertoire of original songs, Blackout continues to perform at the highest level. If you haven’t heard their music, it’s just a matter of time.
