The Lupins formed in 1990 by Stoley (Stoley P.T.), Lance Tawzer (ex-Material Issue), Johnny "Beitr" Furman (The Cells) and Jay Rayjeck (TRS-80) on the campus of Elmhurst College near Chicago, IL and were later joined by guitarist Jaison "Blast" Chasko (Suffrajett).

They recorded their first demos with Jeff Murphy (Shoes, Material Issue) at Short Order Recorder in Zion, IL. The Lupins played small clubs and local college gigs until meeting up with The Drovers. The Drovers took them under their wing and gave them gigs as an opening act on their regional tours.

The Lupins recorded their debut album, 'Slob' (with cover art by their friend Liz Phair), on The Drovers' Tantrum Records in 1993. It was recorded at Chicago Trax and many "Drovers" musicians contributed to the making of the record. The Lupins began to gain momentum and rose to the top of the Chicago club scene.

In 1994, The Lupins started attracting the attention of many labels, especially RCA Records. The Lupins signed a multi-album deal with RCA and recorded their major-label debut, 'Queenie 8,' with producer Nick Launay (Killing Joke, Midnight Oil, INXS, Gang of Four, Silverchair). The album was recorded at Chicago Trax and mixed at One On One Studios in Los Angeles.

Prior to the release of 'Queenie 8,' the Lupins recorded a single "Peach" on Maddawg Records. The Lupins toured colleges and supported artists such as Bush, Filter, Everclear and Toadies. The Lupins recorded a song called "Take" which was included in the New Line Cinema feature Dumb and Dumber as well as the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on RCA Records. The soundtrack achieve Gold Sales Status in 1996. "Take" was recorded at Track Record in Los Angeles.

They played sold out shows in Chicago at the Metro, Double Door, Elbo Room and other large venues. They performed at the Q101 Jamboree with Duran Duran, Sheryl Crow, The Stone Roses, Flaming Lips, and others. Band members Lance Tawzer and Stoley were approached by Q101 PD, Bill Gamble to host a radio show. The "Lance and Stoley" evening radio show became very popular and Q101 signed a deal to have them host the morning show interviewing music guests (Live, Matthew Sweet, Echo & the Bunnymen, Quincy Jones, and others).

After a shakeup at RCA, The Lupins signed with Sony/Murmer in Australia. The Lupins released their 'Monsignor Venus' EP on Chicago independent label Fuse Records in 1996, which was recorded by Van Christie (Die Warzau) and Blaise Barton (Liz Phair, Bob Dylan).

The Lupins contributed songs to several commercially release compilations as well as some industry albums. The Lupins recorded additional songs for a future Release with Blaise Barton but in 1997 they decided to break up and work on other projects. .
