De Maskers ('The Masks') were a sixties beat/psych/rock band from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, effectively a continuation of ZZ & De Maskers. The name change was a logical step following the departure of frontman Bob 'ZZ' Bouber; De Maskers carried without him, from 1966 onwards. The band silently fell apart towards the end of the 1960s, but re-united several times in the 1980s and 2000s.
Although the band enjoyed most of its chart succes in the ZZ & De Maskers years (1962-1965) De Maskers also had a few modest Dutch hits 'post-ZZ', notably Brand New Cadillac (#15 in October 1965). They also recorded as the backing band of Chubby Checker, something they'd also done during the 'ZZ years'. The band was credited as 'The Masks' on some of the Checker single sleeves.
By the time of the name change De Maskers had developed into a rhythm & blues/beat band singing in English, although there was the odd Dutch-language track.
De Maskers silently vanished by the end of the 1960s as star guitarist Jan de Hont had left the group, but re-united in the 1980s, releasing the comeback LP You Only Live Twice in 1986. More reunion performances followed in 2000 and 2004. .
