Steve Aoki, the DJ/Producer, grew up in Newport Beach, CA, and went to college at UCSB. In his early 20s, he founded his own label, Dim Mak Records, in 1996. The label has released music by other electro house artists such as Datsik, Infected Mushroom, Dada Life, Zeds Dead, his own collaboration with Tiësto, MSTRKRFT, The Bloody Beetroots, Felix Cartal and Mustard Pimp, as well as by Bloc Party, Battles, The Kills, The Gossip, Klaxons, Scanners, Whitey, and Mystery Jets to name a few. Born Steven Siro Vai on the 6th June 1960 in Carle Place, New York, United States, when growing up the young Vai became interested in rock giants such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper (guitarist Glen Buxton), and Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page), leading him to take up the guitar. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, Victor's love for music was cultivated and shaped by his mother, a singer and a Julliard-trained pianist. After attending Bowdoin College, Victor moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area where he built a successful business and began studying voice and songwriting.
In 1998, a mutual friend introduced Victor to the Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter, Kashif (Kenny G, George Benson, Whitney Houston), which led to their collaboration on his debut album, Promise (1999). Apart from bass player Peter Knorn, there were two guitarists, Tommy Newton and John Lockton, as well as drummer Bernie Van of Graaf forming the group.
